Job interview tips

You've been handing out tons of resumes and finally got called for a job interview! Here are a few tips for doing well in the interview and hopefully land that job:

Do your research.

Make sure you know about the company. If it's a store in the mall, make sure you browse the shop and maybe try a few things on. You can also try searching the company on the internet at google or wikipedia. At the end of the interview you'll probably be asked if you have any questions and this is another chance to show what you know.

Plan ahead.

Before the interview think about what questions you'll probably be asked and practice your answers. Some common questions are:

  • Why are you interested in this position?
  • What experience do you have?
  • What's your biggest strength and weakness?
  • What is an example of a challenge you faced and how did you handle it?

Dress the part.

Find out how the other employees dress - if you're applying for an office job, don't show up in a hoodie.

B.Y.O.R. (Bring Your Own Resume)

Bring your own resume with you (and make sure you remember what you wrote!) and a couple references who have given you their permission.

Be early

Being late, even by five minutes, is a really bad first impression. Make sure to double-check the address and figure out how long it will take you to get there in advance.

Chill out

Try not to freak out or get nervous. If you can't remember a question or start to babble, ask the interviewer to repeat the question. At the end of the interview, shake their hand and thank them for their time.
